OUR MANDATE
To bring to Toronto's centre a theatre company that provides a great
theatrical experience by choosing a diverse selection of plays, using
creative and inventive directors with high caliber crew, and casting
actors varying in age and experience.
To make theatre accessible to the public in a downtown location at reasonable ticket prices. COMPANY HISTORY City Centre Theatre Productions Inc was founded in September of 2001 by a dedicated group of individuals coming from diverse backgrounds in the theatre community. Founding members of the group had met through various productions throughout the GTA and it was apparent that there were few non-equity theatre companies within downtown Toronto, particularly ones offering challenging opportunities to actors, directors and artistic staff of all experience levels. Founding members, Jan Francies (General Manager/Artistic Director), Paddy Cardarelli (experienced actor and theatre aficionado), and Lois Stephenson (Resident Stage Manager) have been joined by Paul Young (Box Office/Producer), Jennifer Singh (Pemberton) (Designer/ Producer), Peter Gooch (Treasurer) and Yvonne Westlake (FOH Manager). This group collectively has well over 100 years of valuable theatre experience! They decided to use it to form this company to give the public quality theatre at an affordable price, in downtown Toronto. LAST SEASON'S PREVIOUS NEWS Update (Posted May 2, 2005) The run of Stepping Out finished on Saturday to a full house! The show went really well and we have received nothing but compliments. We are proud of this great success. Thanks to the actors for all their hard work and our dedicated crew! Here are some of the comments we have received: "A great show, as usual. Very well acted!" - Leslie, Toronto "I will be back next week with more of my friends. They will love it!" - Asha, Richmond Hill "Thanks for staging this wonderful show. We enjoyed every minute!" - Carl, Mississauga You can read more about the Production here and the Press Release is here. The cast rehearsed for 8 long weeks and we are very proud of them for learning both tap and the script - it was a challenge, but it was worth it! Thanks to Billy Orlowski for teaching us the dance steps and choreographing a really fun show! Auditions for Stepping Out were in January. We were very happy with the turnout - given the weather! We auditioned over 65 actors for the 10 roles in our spring 2005 production. We had a great time in the auditions - thanks to everyone that came out! Set in a North London church hall, Stepping Out chronicles several months in the life of a beginners tap dance class. Each of the eight students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, has his or her own reason for joining. Whatever the cause, they make a point of coming every week to chat, relax and, if they can manage to, learn a couple of dance steps. Led by Mavis, their eternally patient instructor, and accompanied by the acerbic pianist Mrs. Fraser, the students (who range from hopeless to competent) strive to master the basics of dance. But the steps and routines are just the background for the real focus of the play the relationships and interactions of these ten very different people. By their final performance, not only have the class members developed some degree of skill, by they have also overcome the inhibitions, awkwardness and personality conflicts that have kept them out of sync. City Centre finished the run of Shirley Valentine at the beginning of November. Audiences loved the show and it was a superb treat to have Malorie Mandolidis back to perform this inspiring show once again. "I really liked the show, a wonderful plan and an excellent actress." "This is a delightful play and Malorie is an outstanding actress." See the Photo Gallery for pictures of the show! |
